Excellently staged and you may smartly dialogued, it will have no great problem into the lifestyle off its very ugly label.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Movie Bulletin told you “The movie movements during the an easy pace, the newest talk are advanced and you will characterisations fundamentally energetic. The fresh film’s publisher and director, Robert Rossen, sets up a multidimensional chess video game, getting mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, his boss (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Received), a cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sibling (Nina Foch) worked from the gambling enterprise and you can old an excellent corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). New caustically epigrammatic script, brand new cast’s suavely controlled body gestures regarding love and you will menace, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and fashionably assertive images (along with his political conscience) get this pugnacious but really detailed spectacle a low profile vintage of style.” [ ten ]

As the spot pursue a familiar development, the brand new characterizations try new in addition to shows suitable so you’re able to overbalance. Dialog try terse and you can topical, avoiding the sentimental, phoney touching. Unusual camera basics appear now and then to heighten attention and you can momentarily arrest the attention. Good teamplay by the Robert Rossen, doubling while the director-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, brand spanking new blogger and user producer, and additionally helps with making it a soft manufacturing.” [ eleven ]

Its primarily a point of enjoying Mr. Powell proceed through his paces smartly when you find yourself a giant shed away from actors and you can actresses give him conventional service. Evelyn Keyes takes on the great little lady just who brings about the newest best in your and you may Ellen Received ‘s the sleek and you may slinky vixen who becomes him towards jams. Thomas Gomez try oily once the villain and Lee J. Cobb do a different in a position journey just like the an exhausted police inspector whom ultimately closes possible. Significant amounts of consuming and you can smoking is done of the most of the alarmed.” [ twelve ]
